Biography
William Hook's background in art began at home. It was through the influence of his father and grandmother, a professional photographer and architect respectively, that art became second nature to him. Other family members were New Mexico art/architecture historian Bainbridge Bunting, prominent Italian painters Gino and Bertha Venanzi, as well as Pulitzer Prize winning author, Willa Cather. In 1970 he recieved his BFA from the University of New Mexico; he then studied at the Universita Italiana Per Straniere in Perugia, Italy. Post graduate studies at the Art Center College of Design, Los Angeles concluded his seven years of formal training.
Hook paints with a broad brush and an
enthusiasm for creating colorist works. The landscape is a subject that Hook
explores like no other artist - his works focus on vast horizons, cloud
patterns, transitional light, and the bold color of the western scene. He has
received numerous awards and his paintings are included in museum, corporate,
and private collections worldwide. He is a signature member of the California
Art Club, Founder of the Artists-in-Residence program at the Big Sur
Environmental Institute; and Master Artist - Artists of America. Hook splits his
time between studios in Carmel, CA and Santa Fe, NM.
