"Michael Godfrey, a representational painter of landscapes, was born in Germany in 1958 and raised in North Carolina. He studied art at East Carolina University and received a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree in 1982.
Inspired by the many moods of light, his goal is to "capture and interpret these moods on Canvas". His paintings focus on light filtering through the landscape. In his handling of color and surface Godfrey softens the edges implying detail rather than actively stating it, concentrating on the experience of the moment, reveling in the warm glow of sunlight on the landscape.
Godfrey has dedicated a substantial effort to mountainous subjects, from the Appalachians to the Sierra Nevada mountains. He finds that mountains rejuvenate his spirit and "Help put things in perspective."
The artist prefers to work in oils over any other
medium because of the medium's forgiving nature and glazing characteristics.
Godfrey has shown his paintings in over 70 exhibitions, winning recognition
yearly. For example, in 1990, 1991, and 1993 his paintings were juried
into the Arts for the Parks completion. In 1992, the United States
Ambassador to Russia selected Godfrey's "First Light" to hang in the Moscow
embassy. And, since 1994 he has exhibited his work at the Peppertree
Ranch invitational in Santa Ynez, California. The Ross Merrill's Award
of Merit went to Michael for his oil painting "Gold on Signal Mountain", also
featuring Grand Teton National Park."
