All of Mr. Knaub's paintings
are created in oil.
Ray Knaub was born and raised in the Gering/Scottsbluff, Nebraska area to parents of German-Russian descent. His family has always been a farming family, so a natural bond with the land formed. He attended Baylor University in Waco, Texas from 1958-1960 and received his Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Nebraska 1963. He continued his post graduate studies at the University of Colorado-Boulder.
Because of his close association with the land, Knaub goes far beyond mere documentation of his favorite subject matter. While recording the places he knows and loves, he also captures something of a wider reality. He says, "I feel that for most artiste the first 15 years of life really has an influence on what kind of artist they become. I think it is evident that my interests are landscape and what man has done to it-man's relationship to the hand. Harmony, wholeness, light, space and reverence for the land are adjectives I could use to describe my interests in painting."
Based on the evidence of his work, some of the artist's favorite places are the farms of the Nebraska countryside. He paints many of his works in a manner that might be called romantic realism. "I like clouds, light, depth, textures, and patterns that one sees in the land. I like the various kinds of light during the day and how it affects the landscape. My paintings I think, for the most part, run toward the meditative, quiet mood and I reflect a sense of peace, tranquility and beauty." says Knaub.
About his own work, Ray Knaub says, "I can't say that I paint purely for myself. painting is an emotional communication with another person. The viewer brings to the painting his or her own baggage. they interpret it the way they want. Those interpretations may or may not coincide with mine, but that's all right."
Ray has exhibited widely for the past twenty years, participating in many one-man shows, and group and invitational shows including the Coors Western Art Exhibition in Denver; the University of Wyoming Art Museum, Laramie and the Oil Painters of America, Dan Antonio, Texas.
The artist's work is in corporate and museum collections across the country, and has also been subject of features in Art of the West, Southwest Art, Focus/Santa Fe, Art talk, The American Spectator, and the Albuquerque Tribune publications."
