Daria Shachmut Bio
From earliest days on a farm in Massachusetts, Daria Shachmut has been
fascinated
by animals. At the Worcester Art Museum's art classes for children, "I was
thrilled to
learn color mixing so that I could paint a Palomino horse " golden brown."
Since moving to Carmel Highlands, California, down the road from the Hereford
cattle of
El Sur Ranch and Carmel Valley, Daria Shachmut has focused on portraits
conveying
each animal’s temperament through its body gestures. "The way our eyes capture
only
the most essential elements is key; I focus on the economical use of
brushstrokes to
elicit the sense of a moment caught in time. I love these cattle; no two look
alike and
each one has a unique personality. My husband Ken, the most patient of men,
spends
numerous afternoons in the car as I make the acquaintance of young calves,
steer,
cows, and bulls.
Her work has been shown in prestigious museums including the Corning Museum,
Corning, New York, the Minnesota Museum of American Art and is in the collection
of
the Oakland Museum, Oakland, California. KQED featured her in a half-hour
television
program, Portfolio.
2011. Most recently, her paintings were juried into the Salon International 2011
at the
Greenhouse Gallery of Fine Art, San Antonio, Texas and also the Scottsdale Salon
of
Fine Art at the Legacy Gallery, Scottsdale, Arizona. The Portrait Society of
America
awarded her work honors in the Members Only Competition.
2010. Her work earned honors at the 19th National Exhibition of Oil Painters of
America
at the Legacy Gallery, Scottsdale and was an award winner in the Artist's
Magazine
Annual Competition, December 2010 issue. An award of excellence was given to her
work at the Great Plains Art Museum, Annual American Plains Artists Exhibition.
