Artist's Statement

I have a strong passion in the painting of Still Life subjects. I love the relative simplicity of the objects I choose to paint, the simple, clean shapes and colors of fruit, vases, bowls, etc. Even within such simple subjects so much is portrayed of my style, passion, and technique. Whether working with brush, pencil, or knife every painter leaves their unique marks on the canvas. These identify the artist, allowing recognition of their work, providing a roadmap for the viewer on how the artist paints.

Even at the very base level of these 'simple' Still Life subjects, the fingerprints and identity of my art can be witnessed. From the very first moment when I choose which object to use and what to discard; where to place them and how to light the arrangement, I can exert both freeing and a constant source of inspiration, simply by varying how I present and arrange the objects. I can paint these groupings tirelessly with a combination of new arrangements, different lighting conditions, perhaps an alternate setting or a different point of view; each painting as fresh and new as its predecessor.

I enjoy the adaptation of color and it's manipulation within the work, often not holding true to what colors I see before me, but choosing to enhance or alter these to lift the mood or theme and greater reflect the paintings whole. Much of my original influence for a painting is often drawn from the play of light and shadow across the arrangement, or the strength of a key color within the scene and it's effect across the grouping. I try to paint quickly, but methodically keeping my original vision always at the forefront of my mind. Sometimes however, this can evolve as the painting continues and take me in a new and exciting direction before the painting's completion.
