All of Debbie's paintings are created in Pastel.
“Debbie Wardrope, a native of the San Francisco Bay Area, received her education at the California College of Arts and Crafts in Oakland, California. She graduated “With Distinction” with a BFA in illustration. She is a signature member of the Pastel Society of the West Coast and is active in several regional art associations. She has had a solo exhibition and has exhibited at Art Expo New York as well as showing her work in a number of galleries from Yountville to Carmel.
All of Debbie's paintings are created in pastel, a medium which gained in popularity thanks to a female artist, Rosalba Carriera, in the 17th century. Pastels are made of pure pigment ground into a fine powder mixed with a binder such as gum tragacanth and a chalk or clay filler, then pressed into sticks. Soft pastels have more pigment and less binder than harder pastels. Although often thought of as a drawing medium, pastels have the same richness and glowing colors of oils and other traditional painting mediums. As soon as they are framed, pastels are as permanent as oils.
Pastels are Debbie’s medium of choice due to the vibrancy of their color and the dramatic lighting effects she can achieve with them. She pushes her pastel work well beyond traditional boundaries with her precise detail. Debbie’s design background is evident in her tightly woven compositions and her unique ability to capture light makes her paintings glow.
Debbie loves to paint gardens, old architecture, dogs and cats, vineyards and vintage items. She often chooses to paint subjects that others might pass by. She enjoys challenging herself and has recently begun incorporating figures into her repertoire. Debbie’s artistic style and use of color, light and shadows evoke memories of a simpler, more peaceful time gone by and invite the viewer to share in these very special moments.
Debbie says, “I believe that art should be beautiful, accessible and evoke an emotional response in the viewer. I strive to create images that are immediately recognizable but are things that are frequently overlooked in the rush of everyday life. I love to take something that may not be attractive in reality but through the use of light and color, becomes something more. I want my art to glorify God and create feelings of peace, serenity and timelessness in the viewer.”
