"Steele Xiang was born in Beijing, China in 1947.  He was considered a prodigy since the age of six when we won the silver prize in Beijing Children's Drawing Competition.  He was admitted to the very prestigious Beijing Children's Palace Art School while in the third grade.  At the age of fifteen he was accepted to the very exclusive nine year program at the Central Institute of Fine Arts in Beijing, the finest art school in China, whose instructors were trained in Europe and Russia.  Only a dozen are admitted from the thousand of yearly applicants.

"By the age of twenty he began receiving portrait commissions from government dignitaries, politicians and other famous people.  Among those who he painted were the Prime Minister of China, numerous Central Committee members as well as several portraits of Mao Tse Tung and his wife Chi Chi la Gu.

"From 1973 until 1982 Mr. Xiang held a teaching position at the Shanghai Teacher's University.  In 1982 he became the Fine Arts Director and Editor of the Fine Arts Division of the Shanghai Publishing Co.  In 1986 he was asked by Shanghai University to head the art program and to be the chief professor of the College of Fine Arts.

"Xiang emigrated to the United States in 1988 where he continued  to study at the Academy of Art College in San Francisco.  His style, a mixture of western and oriental art, was enthusiastically received.  He was invited to participate in a variety of exhibitions across the country.

"Since 1994, Xiang has returned to the western realistic style, concentrating on landscape painting.  In 1995, he won first prize at the prestigious California Art Club 86th Gold Medal Show with his painting, Dance Class.
